Johan StemmetJohan Stemmet

Johan Stemmet is of Namaqualand descent. He was born in Springbok, and grew up in Kleenzee, a Diamond Mining Town.

Johan is married to Colleen, a high school mathematics teacher and deputy principal in Johannesburg. They have two sons, Carl and Etienne. Carl is an aspirant Film Producer, who is currently completing his Masters Degree in Directing and Scriptwriting. Etienne is busy with his Honours in Degree in Information Technology, he composes music for computer games and films, as he specialises in Multimedia. Both Carl and Etienne attend the University of Pretoria, or as it is fondly called “TUKKIES”.

Fast Facts:
  • Johan spent his childhood in Kleinzee, Namaqualand.
  • He attended Jan Van Riebeeck High School in Cape Town
  • His Tertiary years were spent at the University of Stellenbosch, and as a Postgraduate; he spent his days studying at The University of Cape Town.
  • As an Educator, he taught at Rondebosch Boys High School, where he was subject head for Afrikaans First Language and History.
  •  As an artist, he has 12 albums and has been performing to crowds, nationwide for the past 30 years.
  • He has been presenting television shows for the past 30 years establishing him as the only individual in South African television history who has been on TV continuously without skipping a year for 30 years.

    Johan van RensburgJohan van Rensburg

    Johan is from Potchefstroom. This is where he was born and schooled, where he studied and eventually became a lecturer in music. Johan Van Rensburg spent the first 35 years of his life in “Potch”.

    During his student years, at the NWU (Potchefstroom University) Johan started as member later, the leader of the popular “Alabama Student Group”. Under his musical direction, they performed their first revue in 1967 and he was actively involved with the group untill1980. For the past 20 years, he has been the honorary president of the student- based organisation and thus he is able to keep his finger on the pulse of the organisation and all it’s projects.

    During his years with Alabama, Johan met Rina Hugo and the pair got married in 1971. Shortly after the wedding, the two furthered their education in music in Boston, USA, and only started a family in 1976. Riaan is their first-born and a bit later, the couple was blessed with a baby girl, Anri. Riaan has followed closely in his parents’ footsteps and studied music. Today Riaan is a professional musician and is married.  Anri entered into matrimony with Etienne van der Linde and still keeps busy with photographic modelling, graphic design and more recently, her musical interest got the better of her, and she succumbed – in the form of a club DJ.  Anri designs (amongst many things) CD covers for musicians and her work is recognised by her trademark, Dream Out Loud.

    Johan has, over the years composed and arranged more than his fair share of music, especially for radio and television programs. At his home in Randburg, he has a well-equipped professional studio, in which most of his work, including his only CD – “Die Tekkie-rag” came to life. Many of Rina’s accompaniments for her concerts and CD’s are also produced in this studio.

    With the exception of the music that he makes, Johan’s other hobby is his interest in stars and the galaxy. He enjoys an occasional game of golf, but his most enjoyable activity, the one, which affords him the most physical activity, is his beloved sport … snooker!
